The Fourth Symphony

During his lifetime, Dvorak's first four symphonies were performed but not published. The symphonies 5 through 9 were published as symphonies 1 through 5 in the order 6 7 5 8 9.

After Dvorak's death, his four earlier symphonies were discovered and published. The numbering of all nine symphonies was revised to organize the works chronologically.

Dvorak's 4th Symphony, was composed and premiered in 1874, and revised substantially in 1888 once Dvorak had fully developed his symphonic style of composing. The published version appeared in 1912.

Although the four movements are based of forms from the Classical Period, Dvorak takes many liberties with each movement to experiment with stretching the boundaries of tonality and expression.
